
Summary Job Description:
The Assistant Coach supports all levels of programming and coaching, focusing on developing the competitive sprint team, youth recreational programs and all club paddling and aquatic components. This is an outdoor, active position coaching the sport of canoe and kayaking in the competitive discipline of flat-water sprint and also learn to paddle programs.
The assistant coach works closely with the Head Coach to bring the programming alive, mentoring the athletes and promoting positive competition, providing individual feedback, running practice as directed, and ensuring a safe environment on and off the water. The assistance coach ensures club property is treated appropriately, operates the safety boats and provides first aid if needed.
Work Environment
Training and development occur primarily at Shumway Lake during the summer months and for the high-performance team, at the Thompson River, at various regattas, and possibly training camps. The assistant coach is adaptive and organized and has reliable transportation. The Assistant coach promotes and seeks out athletes for development from the recreational paddling programs and works with groups and individually to support athletes in reaching their goals. The Assistant Coach is the first point of contact for athletes and is a support and leader within the club.
The work environment is dynamic: at the lake, during dry land training, and on the road during competitions. Hours of work fluctuate in a reciprocal time-off-in-lieu arrangement when required. Weekends, evenings, and early mornings are occasionally necessary, with scheduling in two-week blocks.

Counselors are the support backbone of the summer program delivery. They work in small teams to energetically deliver outdoor paddling programs. They arrive at the lake ready to work, help prepare the facility for the day, and greet parents or teachers as the paddlers arrive. They help record arrivals and keep participants organized and safe while teaching and supervising paddling sports within a team atmosphere. Games and activities are conducted on both land and water. Kayaks, canoes, Stand-up boards, swimming activities, and on-land games are all explored, with breaks for snacks and lunch. Connecting with the campers all day while keeping games and activities flowing are the primary duties.
Work Environment
Counselors work outside, often delivering day-long programs to children, teens, and occasionally adults. Flexibility is necessary in working with unforeseen conditions such as smoke, weather, changing COVID Protocols, and varying groups. Counselors are expected to be engaged with program participants throughout the day, promoting the club culture and paddling sports. Counselors keep an eye out for possible future competitive team athletes and encourage them to develop through demonstrations and spreading the idea of joining the club long-term.

They are energetic, love sports and games, are capable of physical activity throughout the day, and like to work on a team while setting the tone for a fun, hardworking group. They arrive at the lake first, prepare the facility for the day, and greet teachers or parents as the paddlers arrive.
They record arrivals and keep participants organized and safe while teaching and supervising paddling sports. They mentor Counselors while providing direction and support. Games and activities are conducted on both land and water. Kayaks, canoes,
Stand-up boards, swimming activities, and on-land games are all explored with breaks for snacks and lunch. They work on teams with Counselors, provide leadership, and take direction from the Coach.
Work Environment
